GOLDSMITHS HISTORY

Goldsmiths began as a family business in a small Newcastle shop in 1892 by a Northumbrian worthy, Thomas Cooke. Since then it has grown into one of the major jewellery groups in Britain, still run on family lines, with much of the old family atmosphere retained in all of the shops it owns and operates throughout the UK.

When Thomas Cooke, son of James Cooke, a villager of Dalton, 10 miles outside Newcastle, opened his shop at the corner of Blackett Street and Pilgrim Street, his first weeks takings, under the name of The Northern Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company, amounted to £133. In 1997 the company's turnover for 12 months was over £31 Million - striking proof that following the basic principle of faithful trading laid down by Thomas is a recipe for success today.

Like so many of his fellow Victorians, Thomas Cooke was a man of great energy and foresight. Even before he started the Northern Goldsmiths and Silversmiths, he was active in a number of business ventures in Newcastle, trading as a jeweller in New Bridge Street under the name of Field & Co., as well as being a partner in three other concerns, Street & Co., jewellers in Westgate Road, the Equitable Loan Co., pawnbrokers in Pink Lane, and Hedley, Turnbull and Cooke, private bankers. He was also a founder director of Tilley's, the famed restaurant in Blackett Street, where his initials "T.C." can still be seen on the premises, now used by Menzies & Co., the newsagents.

Thomas Cooke stayed in control of the business right up to his death in October 1914. A memorial of his life exists in modern Newcastle, where Sidney Grove and Crossley Terrace in the west end are named after his 2 elder sons.
